There are two acts that were created to protect your credit rights, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) which works together in many ways with the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act), and the Fair Debts Collections Practices Act (FDCPA). Maybe your credit report shows you have late payments three months in a row for a credit card back in 2010. We'll dispute this with your credit card company and ask for proof. And just like that, the three months of late payments, according to your credit report, never happened. It must come off your credit report by law.
The same applies for collections, charge-offs, etc.
